Last Tuesday was the ever interesting Pancake Day, which is also known as Shrove Tuesday.

Both chaplaincies on Oxford Road were either having a Pancake Sale or Pancake Party! :D And of course, I got myself a pancake too and drowned it in caramel syrup.

You are probably wondering.. What is Pancake Day? Who celebrates it? Well... go Google it lah! :P For those pemalas, I asked a girl I met at church while eating pancake what the whole event was about. She told me that Pancake Day is traditionally celebrated by the Christians before Lent in the UK to use up all the ingredients (like butter, sugar, egg) which people in the olden days were not allowed to indulge in during Lent. I got the 8th rank.

I am happy with my results :) But I could have scored better, considering the craziness of studying before exams :S I've never had a full-day-non-stop study schedule (with only meals, sleep, and toilet breaks) before and it was driving me nuts for 2 weeks! *Though I admit I spent a fair amount of time day-dreaming, reading Twilight, and watching Bleach. Hoho!* Gonna try harder for Semester 2!

But of course, I don't aim to be the smartest person in my year or beat people in class rankings. I don't wish I scored a higher average than the next person above me. My aim is to get the best I can out of this studying abroad experience. :) To learn & understand well, to think, to improve, to work with people, to get the best out of people and myself, to do what I want to do, to enjoy and to experience.

At the end of this course, I want to leave UK with a good degree summing up all my best efforts, with lots of great friends from around the world, and lots of experiences that you will be jealous of. Wahahaha!

Happy Belated Chinese New Year Everyone!

A start to a Prosperous Year of the Ox :)

CNY here is completely different from celebrating it in Malaysia. Firstly, NO ANG POOOOOWWWW~~!!! T.T And we were having exams during the start of CNY. phew~ The atmosphere is also totally different because most people here don't have any idea that it's CNY. They only notice that something's happening when China Town looked 'more chinese' all of a sudden. And most chinese restaurants (like MosoMoso) was suddenly closed for sometime.

I felt so left out from the CNY celebration that I went straight to China Town to buy my 'Nien Gau' after my last paper. Apparently 'Nien Gau' is quite popular here too because it was sold out at the first 2 supermarkets we went to. Luckily I found it in the 3rd supermarket! Yay! Wondering how much it cost? Of course it was $$$ lah! £4.38 for as big as a standard Malaysian dinner plate (British standard dinner plate is extra big).

Talking about China Town, I was doing grocery shopping in the city last Sunday and I stumbled into a small CNY festival there!




They were having some kind of bazaar selling food (both Chinese & British food), Chinese handicrafts, balloons, with a small fun fair for kids (the fun fair completely NO kaitan with CNY).

And that's the stage in the middle of China Town's square. They were just setting it up when I came, probably had performances and lion dance or something. :)

At night I went to a 'Chinese New Year' clubbing party. Which also kinda had NO kaitan with CNY -.-" They did have some pathetic 'lion dance' where the lion was so small I couldn't even see it from behind the crowd. And the music (gongs, drums, cymbals) was also so pathetic I would give the lone lion who always comes visiting your houses during CNY a better rating. And though the theme was RED I was one of the few red species in that club. Hoho! Check it out:

until we saw these CRAZY girls exposing themselves to the biting minus degree celsius ice outside. Wearing my long coat, scraf, and thick gloves with every inch of my body covered, I instantly felt like the warmest person on earth.

And lastly, just a few hours ago, MSSM (Malaysian Students' Society of Manchester) organized a CNY celebration specially for the Malaysians ;) Some VIPs came from Malaysia too, don't quite remember their names, but one of them is the Deputy High Commissioner of Malaysia. There was a lion dance, quick video, CNY songs, and most importantly Free Food!
