MSSM AGM 2008 (22/11/08)

Tiring tiring day.. MSSM (Malaysian Student Society of Manchester) Election lasted from around 2 to 8.30 pm. I've been stuck at the Student Union hall for 7 hours!! (I came at 1.30 pm)

I never imagined how formal the election would be! 3 days before the election we needed to submit our manifestos, and then present a short speech on the day itself, and later questions will be directed to us by the crowd. After this the voting will take place.

What post did I run for? Have a look..

Yup. This was my manifesto.

Impressive?

Haha! Not sure about that, but I was told it was straight to the point ;)

I was happy and relieved to be the only person to submit my manifesto for Publicity Secretary before the deadline.. I thought I was safe and that I would get the post quite easily. Unfortunately, this girl turned up at the last minute, submitting her manifesto on the election day itself! I know it is allowed to be a last minute candidate, but it just seemed so unfair! I mean.. can you consider someone who does not even make the effort to respect the deadline a good committee member?

But whatever I have against it doesn't really matter because you are allowed to do so. Me and Li-lin, who was running for Events Coordinator entered the hall this afternoon, all ready for the AGM Election and realized that NONE of our friends were there to support us! Other people were arriving.. other candidates.. and a whole bunch of their friends to support them! How nice~~~

To cut the whole day short, we both didn't get the positions we wanted. Wai Xin and May were so sweet to pop in just in time to vote for me :) But still, the other girl won. I think it was mostly due to her having many more friends in the hall than I had. And she looked the type more than I do. Personally, I think I presented myself better in regards to the content of my speech and during the Q&A session.

But what I'm really not satisfied with is that I actually had a
mission for this post. I know it's not a significant post in the commitee, but still I think that the Publicity Secretary can do so much more than just send emails! I want to make sure that future members wouldn't feel so neglected as I did, that more Malaysians can have activities together (like Fresher's Day Out) and form lasting friendships rather than just knowing someone's name and say hi/bye from small events! And most of all make all members and other non-Malaysian friends feel at home in MSSM! Well.. their loss. But still all the best to Alex and the new committee. I'm sure they'll come up with a great year for MSSM anyway :)

The Lord answered my prayer to help present a good speech though. I had a few good comments about my speech after that! *proud* Weirdly enough, I do not feel sad about losing the post, but rather relieved and encouraged to try out much more things! It was definitely a worthwhile experience. I had the opportunity to learn to promote myself on a near-professional level, and gained the confidence to be myself while telling everyone in the crowd what I believe in. You don't get to do that often do you? ;) And of course, learn to defend my stand/capabilities if someone should question it. I really admire Kak Dibah though, she has a sharp mind, is aware of current issues and is not afraid to stand for what she believes in.. very impressive.

We spent the end of our SUPER COLD (did I mention that we were freezing the whole time in the hall?) day at McD to satisfy Princess Wai Xin's craving for McD :p I'm very very glad to get 21 votes.. that means that 21 people in the hall supported me! That's a very encouraging result, seeing that only 3 of my friends (including Li-Lin) were there to support me. Quite.. well.. very disappointed with the rest though. Anyway, they are not worth mentioning here since it'll dampen my mood.

Thanks very much to all you voters! I'll use this experience as a stepping stone to achieve much more in the near future ;) Look out everyone cause here I come!

York + Nottingham Trip

Updates!

Been busy this week.. Locked myself up in the room to study but I'm still not getting many things done. Huhu.. Have to have proper time management!

Currently trying to go on DIET. Serious. (and I went and bought myself a packet of 10 Mars bars... -.-") Not gonna eat it unless I'm really desperate anyway... then again I have so much food in the room!

Plan to load myself with fruits.. yay! banana, plum, oranges. Wait.. I still have my jelly beans from Nottingham! And.. of course, that white Christmas tree.. tuuu *points up*. Who wants to share with me?? I bought 2 and can't finish it..

Gonna share pics from 2 of my latest trips! YORK and NOTTINGHAM. Both are really beautiful places~!!! I'm not saying Manchester is ugly laarrr~ But if York and Nott = Beautiful, Manchester = exciting or "happening". Haha! Enjoy the slideshows ;)

Nottingham Visit

(Nottingham Games for Malaysian Students. We went off from Manchester at around 4.45 am, and reached Nottingham Park Campus after 2 hours. It was freezing cold!! What la.. they made us wait in the cold for like nearly an hour before letting us in the sports hall. I didn't play any sport though.. just came as a supporter and ran off to town when the Games started :p )

A li'l more Bri'ish

Halo all!

Been busy this week.

Let me just post a quick one before class! (on a MONday morning~ ZzzZZzz...)

7 lessons to British slangs:

1. Hoover = Vacumn cleaner

eg. I am going to hoover my room.

2. 0 (zero) is said as "node" when making calculations.

eg. 0.0001

instead of saying "zero point zero zero zero one" they say >>>> "node point node node node one"

3. tea = dinner

eg. Have you had your tea? = Have you had your dinner?

Dinner is usually used in posh places. (eg. Having dinner at the restaurant)

4. Bus is pronounced "B-O-O-S" or if you like, bahasa baku "B-U-S", instead of "B-A-S"

5. British common greeting >>> "Are you al'right?"

6. "Thank you" is commonly said as "Cheers!"

7. From old ladies, "Are you alright, love?"

(doesn't mean they love you >.< just a kind greeting!)

And for everyone's benefit.... :

smoking is a NO NO because..

1. You are killing yourself slowly with each puff

2. You are causing more harm to anyone kind enough to talk to you/stand next to you/eat beside you than to yourself

3. You are making yourself less attractive eg. yellow teeth, bad breathe, unhealthy look

4.
You are causing harm to the environment

5. You are making big companies who help more people like you commit suicide grow richer

let's all be ANTI-SMOKING, people!

For the benefit of ourselves, everyone around us, and our future generations

Halloween + Birmingham Trip

Reading week is here! >>>No classes throughout the whole week

wooHOo~! yahOo! Yay~~!! yiPEe!

ok ok.. that's enough. ehem!

Wishing everyone a Happy Belated Halloween~~!

The halloween celebration here was in full swing! Most people would dress up and go to clubs to party during the short Halloween season. (I still wonder how the girls here can wear miniskirts and tube tops when it is -ve degree C outside!) Practically everywhere had a halloween celebration, including Halls of Residences (like IN my flat). You can't possibly miss it unless you lock yourself in your room and pretend to not exist.

Even some people in shops & stores would put on a costume for a day on 31st October! I went for only one halloween party by The Chemical Engineering Society on 28th October at Baa Bar. Didn't dress up as anything though.. :p

The next day after the Halloween party (which lasted until late at night), we had a Birmingham Trip for the Chem Eng 08 conference! (which we had to miss 2 hours of Library Lecture for). This trip was also organized by the Chemical Engineering Society.

We had to wake up early in the morning as the coach leaves at 7am.. not too bad actually, considering the trip to Nottingham this Saturday where we need to leave Manchester at 4.45 am O.O

The trip took us about 2 1/2 hours to reach Birmingham, and about 3 hours to come back because of traffic jams! >:( All we did in the coach was sleep... eat.. chit chat... and sleep some more. And I still felt tired.

Anyway, it was a good experience! I enjoyed the exhibition and informational seminars, but most of all I enjoyed snapping pictures all around the beautiful scenery with friends ;)
